Consideration of DRAFT Resolution 2018-99 to Authorize the City Administrator to Enter into a Two-Way Agreement WAZE Mobile Limited (“WAZE”) to Enroll the City of Franklin in the WAZE Connected Citizens Program (“CCP”)
body
Purpose
The purpose of this memo is to provide information to the Franklin Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) concerning Resolution 2018-99.
Background
Many drivers now use smartphone-based applications (i.e. Google Maps, WAZE, Apple Maps, etc.) as their preferred source for directions and navigation. WAZE, one of these applications, is, in its own words, a “…community-based traffic and navigation app…” that allows its users to “…share real-time traffic and road info…” In short, WAZE users provide other users important information (i.e. construction, crash, road closure, etc.) that may affect their commute.
In 2014, WAZE Mobile Limited (“WAZE), which is owned by Google, Inc., launched its Connected Citizens Program (“CCP”). This program is a two-way data exchange that allows government agencies to share verified traffic data directly with WAZE and its many users. In return, WAZE also shares its real-time data, which can often be faster than more traditional methods. In fact, WAZE data can now be seen on the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s (TDOT’s) SmartWay system.
This Resolution allows the City Administrator to enroll the City of Franklin in the WAZE CCP.
Financial Impact
The WAZE CCP is a free program.
