body

Purpose

The purpose of this memo is to provide information to the Franklin Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) concerning the proposed name, purpose, and membership structure amendments to the Battlefield Preservation Commission.

Background

The Battlefield Preservation Commission held a strategic planning session in January of this year, led by preservation planning consultant Phil Walker.  The goals of the session were to evaluate the purpose and priorities of the Commission and to create a visioning and strategic plan.  The proposed ordinance amendments echo the plan’s recommendations for the Commission’s name, role, and membership structure.  The Commission believes that the recommended amendments better reflect its overall vision to protect Civil War battlefield and sites through identification, preservation, interpretation, maintenance, and recognition.
