body

Purpose

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide information to the Franklin Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) concerning the purchase of protective equipment for the Franklin Police Department SWAT Team.

Background

In the course of normal operations, the Franklin Police Department SWAT Team may encounter various airborne threats. Protective equipment from these dangers is vital to the operations of the SWAT Team. Additionally, SWAT operators must be able to communicate with one another. Currently, the gas masks deployed by the SWAT team are not compatible with the SWAT communications kits, forcing officers to sacrifice the ability to communicate or be susceptible to airborne threats.

Financial Impact

The requested amount is not enough to cover the total cost of the project. Funds in the amount of $5,038.20 will be used from the Police Department’s 2017 annual budget to pay for the remainder of the cost of the equipment. The amount of the grant is $15,000.00.

Recommendation

rec

The City Administrator has approved the Franklin Police Department participation in the Justice Assistance Grant Program consistent with authority granted by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen.
