Update on Fiber Optic Network Buildout.
body
Purpose
The purpose of this memo is to provide information to the Franklin Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) concerning the extension and completion of the City’s fiber optic network.
Background
As early as 2005, the City began the process of connecting its physical assets by means of a fiber optic network and various wireless or infrared devices. The goal was to give maximum connectivity between City buildings, water towers, and park facilities, while reducing the cost of telephone service.
While much of the geographical footprint of the City is covered, there are several isolated properties that require extension of the system. Those additional links need to be completed as quickly as possible to ensure connectivity and network access to City staff and to provide backup communication in the event of natural disaster.
Financial Impact
A report detailing the potential build out costs will be provided.
Recommendation
rec
Staff recommends approval of the extension of the fiber optic system in conjunction with the upcoming budget review.
