Consideration of Resolution 2019-44, “A Resolution To Approve The “Battle of Franklin” Marker Text As Relative To The Fuller Story Initiative.” (05/14/19 WS)
body
Purpose
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide information to the Franklin Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) concerning text options for the approved “Battle of Franklin” marker on the Public Square.
Background
Resolution 2019-15, approved by BOMA at its February 26, 2019, meeting, authorized the placement of a “Battle of Franklin” marker at the Public Square, with the condition that the text for the marker be drafted and returned to the BOMA for consideration and approval at a later date. The community leaders of the “Fuller Story” initiative drafted its preferred text (Option 1) and presented it to the Civil War Historical Commission for a recommendation at its March 14, 2019, meeting. The Civil War Historical Commission provided a favorable recommendation for the text with the condition that additional language be added that details when the Confederate monument was erected and by whom. The additional language is provided in Option 2.
